Advanced Navigational Skills for the Behavioural Management of Children

 

This is an eight week course designed to tackle the unique challenges of foster parenting and caregiving.  The two courses offered are geared to foster parents and caregivers of 0-11 year olds and 12+ year olds.  Each week participants meet together with facilitators, Linda Ogle & Guy Massey. 

 

Course Outline:

 

Part 1

Shifting the Compass Point: Your role as a caregiver

  • Exploring the meaning of behaviour

  • What the children bring to you 

  • What you bring to the children

Part 2

Charting Your Course

  • Reading the markers: Patterns of behaviour

  • Keeping an even keel: Planning interventions

 

Part 3

Staying the Course

  • Elements of constructive discipline

  • The language of encouragement

  • Problem ownership

  • Communication including "I messages" & active listening

  • Problem solving including sibling fights & school/peer conflict

Part 4

Anchoring

  • Family meetings & review

 

 

Participants will have the opportunity to watch real-life video segments applying techniques to challenging circumstances that they may be experiencing at home

Who are the facilitators?  These programs are facilitated by Guy Massey & Linda Ogle who are both registered mediators and who have had many years experience as both parenting educators and as family mediators.

Where are courses offered?  These programs are offered at Nanaimo Family Life Association (1070 Townsite Road in Nanaimo).  Programs may be hosted elsewhere depending on the location of the participants.

How much does it cost?  The cost for the program is $150.00 per participant which includes a handbook and a pre-assessment.  If participants are unable to afford this, and costs are not recoverable by associated institutions, then fees are based on a sliding scale to ensure that anyone who is committed to attending this program has the opportunity to participate.
